Amy Wills’ tennis holiday

25/07/2008 9:02:00 AM
LOCAL rising tennis star, Amy Wills has had an extremely successful, if exhausting couple of weeks, playing in two divisions in two tournaments over the school holidays.

During the first week of holidays, Amy competed in the Medibank Country Championships in Wollongong, winning both the 16s and 17s girls age groups singles

Amy defeated Dominique Pezzutto from Figtree 6-4, 6-1 in her own 16s age group before also defeating Kristina Prentoska also from Figtree 6-3, 6-2 playing up an age division.

Not content with these two titles, Amy then spent her second week of holidays in Sydney at the Metropolitan Hardcourt Championships, again playing in two divisions with great success.

Amy managed to make it to the grand final in the 16 and under girls singles, bowing out to first seed, Katherine Westbury from Sydney 6-2 6-1.

Playing in the girls’ 16s doubles with partner Shannon Cleary from Sydney, the pair were top seeds, unfortunately losing the grand final again, 6-2, 6-1 versus second seeded Courtney Cooper and Amandah Nkomba, both from metropolitan Sydney as well.

Amy was pleased with her performance in both tournaments.

“We (Colin Maher and Amy) have worked really hard in the Medibank series and it’s great to come out on top at the end,” Amy said.

“After being out injured for 10 weeks in the lead up, it was doubly pleasing to win.

“I was second seed versus the top seed in the finals of the hardcourt singles, and it was a good game against a strong opponent.

“Hardcourt is always a lot harder on the body and you come away from the games very sore,” Amy added.

The doubles were great too with some good practice, though Shannon and myself had never played together before.”

Amy has several more tennis tournaments in the offing with the next being the Napean Open Twilight Tournament for $2000 total prize money next weekend and more Australian International Tennis Federation tournaments in Sydney later in the year.

“Without the help and support of Colin and Lyn Maher and my parents and family, I couldn’t be there competing in these great competitions,” Amy added.
