THE Lionesses last Sunday bowed out the BDS Ladies Soccer Competition for 2008, both teams competed strongly on the day and fought hard right to the final whistle.
In second grade the Lionesses took on Bathurst CSU and CSU shot out to a two goal early lead on a field that was more of a mud patch.
The Lionesses tried to play their own game and countered on several occasions but were unable to find the back of the net. The final score CSU 4 – Lionesses Nil.
Overall the season has been a plus for the girls as the main aim this year was to reach semi finals in this the second grade’s first ever year after being quickly put together at the start of the season.
In first grade the Lionesses reached their objective of backing up last season’s good results with an improved season by cementing themselves in the top four sides in this strong competition, which they accomplished in fine style.
Their semi final on the weekend was another great team effort against possibly the best team in the competition.
Bathurst City Colts with all the players back from Western Panthers duty were too strong on the day and it took until the second half for the Lionesses to really display what they’re capable of.
Colts were too classy early in the match but to the Lionesses credit they tried to keep pace with them and had several of their own chances before the half time break with Colts leading two nil.
The second saw the Lionesses hold possession and play good quality attacking soccer mixed with strong determined defence.
Colts scored their third before the Lionesses struck home one of their own before Colts again netted for the final scoreline of 4 goals to one.
The Lionesses now look forward to their presentation night with awards including Player’s Player and Rookie of the Year to be announced along with the traditional Best and Fairest count in both grades.
Tickets for the night are just $25 a head and can be obtained from Dom Kier.
