The Young Yabbies under 17s came so close to a premiership win on Saturday, going down in yet another nail-biting finish just shy on 17 points to 20.
Young again looked dangerous with the ball, with the pace of the outside backs wrong-footing the Waratahs several times early, with Dylen Heidtmann scoring early.
The Waratahs’ discipline at the breakdown and in set plays denied the Yabbies enough ball to gain the upper hand, while long pressure saw their fullback Ben Poutu cross the line for two tries, one converted.
Waratahs’ discipline let them down late in the first half with the Yabbies pressuring their line, finally conceding a penalty, with the goal kicked by Damien Harton, putting Young two points behind, 12-10 at half time.
Young came out slow in the second half, falling back a little in defence especially and letting the Waratahs take the ball to the advantage line.
A try to Waratahs centre Dallan Stanton and penalty goal saw Waratahs leading 20-10 with ten minutes to go and the game beginning to slip out of the Yabbies reach.
Young weren't going to give their premiership up without a fight, lifting spectacularly in the closing stages and another stunning converted try to Dylen Heidtmann from 50 metres out saw the gap narrowed to only a 20-17 deficit.
Yabbies were on the attack in the final stages of the match and Waratah's defence held desperately, finally conceding a penalty in from of the posts with no time left on the clock.
This final attempt however went slightly astray, denying the Yabbies the opportunity to go into extra time and continue the pressure, the final whistle blowing with Waratahs just holding on for the premiership.
Best players for Young were fullback Dylen Heidtmann and centre Damien Harton with solid defence and lightning quick runs, while lock Ryan Shoard was everywhere at the breakdown, in cover defence and in support play.
