Pickers 18s storm into Grand Final

12/09/2008 12:45:00 PM
YOUNG Cherrypickers under 18s roared into the Grand Final with a dominating 30 points to 6 victory over Wagga Kangaroos on Saturday.

With young nearly back to full strength they were always going to be hard to beat.

Young started off strongly with Jordan McLean leading the way forward early while Young’s defence was crushing with Tom Mulquinney and Josh Randall working hard.

An early disallowed try to Nic Langford did not stop the Pickers in attack and a try to fullback Sam Langford, converted by Blake Hewitt got the ball rolling.

Soon after, Mulquinney darted a short run over, and only a short while later again, McLean scored again, both converted by Hewitt, taking Young to a convincing 18-0 lead.

Young then seemed to ease up a little, with a few mistakes creeping into their game allowing the Kangaroos a touch of the ball.

A couple of penalties to the Ross saw them gain territory then a clever kick put them over for a try, converted to take the game to a half time score of 18-6.

The points in the second half were all Hewitt’s, scoring two personal tries and converting to put Young out of reach of the Roos at a final score of 30-6.

The boys now have a well deserved bye this weekend, to recuperate and prepare for the big grand final in Cootamundra next Sunday.

This Sunday, the Kangaroos play Temora for the right to take on the Pickers in the grand final although pickers president Brett ‘Fox’ Maxwell says that our boys will be going into the final as strong favourites after Sunday’s game.

“The boys have been working hard all year under Nic Hall’s expertise and are peaking at the perfect time to bring home the premiership,” Maxwell said.

“They have the ability, talent and maturity to bring home the Weissel Cup and will have a huge crowd of supporters in Cootamundra next week cheering them over the line.”
