Cherrypickers v Junee

25/07/2008 10:11:00 AM
In what shaped up as a huge game for the ‘Pickers first grade, the game started as usual with big hits from both sides as they sorted each other out.

After six minutes Junee scored out wide to lead 4-0. Young soon hit back with a quality try to Simon Greaves after a Nathan Nash break. Leon Boyd converted taking Young to a 6-4 lead. Greaves and Nash then combined again for Nash to score and Boyd again converted.

A try from Junee took the score to 12-8 then another late in the half from a Young mistake saw Young down 12-14 at half time.

Then in a carbon copy of the game against Lavington things turned, no possession and tiring defence from our boys saw the flood gates open.

A Nic Miller try and Boyd goal were Young’s only points in the second half. RESERVE GRADE

With only 10 Reggies turning up, the under 18’s again helped out against top of the table Junee second grade. Gutsy is the only word to say about Young.

Junee skipped away to a 10-0 lead, but through desperation, Young clawed their way back with a try to Jordan McLean and goal from sideline to Andrew Miller. Junee scored a couple more, then Craig Foster gave a great pass to Codie Freeman to score.

With no subs, Young only tired in the last ten minutes to go down 38-10. Zac Ambrose and Jason Brown worked hard as did Matt Leoflath. Players’ player went to Craig Foster.

Young under 18s now sit near top of the ladder after beating Junee 24-16 in another polished display. Tries for Young were two to Reece Dawe and one each to Sam Langford, Jessie Wright and Wil Hurcum. Sam Langford kicked two goals and Jordan McLean one.

Don’t forget to get to the game early next week to watch this quality side go around.

oung under 16s had a lot of early possession with some great defence from both sides before the pickers were awarded a penalty on Junee’s line. Vision and a quick tap from James Tancred saw him go over for the first try of the game; Josh Blair then converted and Young led 6 points to nil.

A mistake from Young from the kick-off put Junee in good field position. and with another set due to a penalty, Junee crossed the line, converting and evening the score.

Young tried hard but poor ball control seemed to keep creeping into their game blunting their attack and then, two brief lapses in defence saw Junee score twice taking the score to 16-6 at half-time.

The second half started well, but Young seemed to have nowhere to go. They had a lot of possession but once again poor ball control and missed tackles saw Junee score and convert.

With 15 minutes left Young finally put on a simple but well executed backline move and Justin Kinna went over the tryline in the corner.

Junee didn’t take long and hit back with yet another try to further the score line to 26 points to 10.

With only 3 minutes remaining Young seemed to fire up and Nick Fuller scored from dummy half. All a little too late, as Junee had the game wrapped up and the final score was 26 points to 14.

Next week crunch time against Temora at Alfred oval on Sunday.
