THE Young Rugby League Oz Tag Cherryettes side went down fighting to the end, eventually losing by seven tries to five to the Kangaroos side at Wagga on Saturday in what can be claimed the match of the day.
The crowd that paid over eight thousand dollars through the gate were treated to a fast and highly skillful game of tag which had them on the edge of their seats for the entire game.
The crowd gave both sides a rousing applause at the final siren as was the excitement of the game with flair and ability abundant.
Roos came out on fire and set up a two try gap before Hayley Major stepped through and then Jessica Millar crossed to level. Roos scored two more and led at the break four tries to two.
The Cherryettes started the second half well and should have narrowed the gap but for a dubious ref call that disallowed a Jess Millar try with ten to go.
Another ref call gave the Roos side a penalty to which they switched to the blind side to go out to five to two.
The Cherryettes stalled for a few minutes and let the Wagga side get another one before a stirring comeback when Loz Sheridan scored wide and Jess Millar scrambled down the side line to get Young back to 6 to 4.
The game seesawed from one end to the other but a lucky break by Roos saw them go in again with four minutes to go.
The girls threw everything at Wagga with some great hands across the field from Jessica Flanders to Samantha Causer and back inside to Megan Durham and on to Stacy Morton.
From the play the ball Amy Braham chipped through and regathered to score but unfortunately for the Cherryettes time had run out and lost 7 tries to 5.
Emma Webb and Annabel Rathjen tried hard all day with Hayley Major voted player of the finals.
All the girls can be proud of their efforts over the entire year and to make the semi finals is a terrific effort.
A big thank you to players of the future Caitlin Silk and Isabella Foreman for making the effort to come to trainings and Caitlin for being on call.
The coaching staff and girls would like to thank the sponsors, Hairhouse Warehouse, Jewelz n Things, Callaghans Carpets and Brahams Builders.
The only disappointing aspect of the girls finals appearances was the very lack of support shown to them by the Young Rugby League committee and all the players with not one bothering to travel and support the girls when they played at Temora against Tumut and then on Saturday.
The seven girls that are under the age of 16 will travel to Parkes on September 28 to represent the Young PCYC in the state Oz Tag Commissioners Shield to which the girls won last year and the coaching staff will be holding training for this next Wednesday at Alfred Oval commencing at 5pm with all new players welcome. Again well done Cherryettes.
