SEVERAL local shooters from Young headed to Wagga last weekend for the 2008 NSW Trap Carnival State Championships shooting well in what was an amazingly competitive competition.
Ben Fensom, just fourteen years old completed in 4 events, shooting a 49 out of 50 in the handicap event, but bought home the ultimate prize when he became the C grade single barrel state champion after winning in a shoot off to take out the title.
Chris Oehm, Damian Burt, Michael Chapman, Graham and Trent Jamieson, Matt and Steve Schiller also completed individually, achieving some impressive scores throughout the weekend.
Matt Schiller, 15 years old, competed in four events, shooting 49 out of 50 in the point score event, while his father ,Steve Schiller, also competed in four events, who shot a 45 out of 50 in the handicap event.
Chris Oehm shot 49 out of 50 in both the point score and double barrel events, while Damian Burt shot 48 out of 50 in the same events.
Graham Jamieson also shot 49 out of 50 in the point score and handicap events and Michael Chapman shot 47 and 48 out of 50 in the same events.
Trent Jamieson shot an impressive 50 out of 50 in the double barrel, which took him into the shootout to continue with a total of 80 out of 81 all up for the event.
It was remarkable that in so many cases a 49 out of 50 was not sufficient to earn a spot in the finals. In fact in the double barrel championship, the finals ran over the three days with the finalists shooting 749 targets straight, before a winner was achieved, this setting a new NSW record.
