The Scottish Dancing Association of Australia held their NSW and ACT Highland Dancing Championship last Saturday in town at the Young Services Club.
Over 80 competitors competed on the day, both in their level sections and the Championship to contest the Title of NSW / ACT Champion.
Judges travelled from Qld, SA , WA and Sydney to adjudicate the event and decide the eventual champions.
The 12 yrs and Under Champion Winner was Courtney Clarke from Lithgow, 13, 14 & 15yrs Champion, the very talented Rebecca Smith from Gosford and 16 yrs and Over Champion, Chantelle Burke of Bathurst.
Angelique Kelly of Young did well to be placed 6th Overall in the NSW and ACT Championship and again won The SDAA Marion Stell Perpetual Trophy for the second year in a row.
On Sunday Dancers returned to the Young Services Club and competed again, this time for the Cherry City Festival Title and Cherry City National Title and other events.
Sunday’s event saw dancers from other states competing against NSW dancers and both the Flamingo's Room and The Main auditrium in the club were overflowing with dancers in kilts.
The 12 yrs and under Cherry City Champion was Courtney Clarke NSW, 13,14 & 15yrs, Kelly Haseldene QLD and 16yrs and Over Chantelle Burke NSW.
Local dancers also competed on the day with Young’s Angelique Kelly winning the Restricted Award, placing fourth in the National Title and second in the Trophy Dance.
Lexi Hay also of Young, did well to come home for the holidays and had a great day placing sixth overall in the 13, 14 and 15 yrs Restricted Premiership, while Shannon Thomson-Jones of Maimaru danced beautifully in the beginners section and placed third in the Beginners Title and fourth in the Trophy Fling.
Young’s Connie Dodge danced well to be placed 6th in the 12yrs and under Restricted Premiership.
Angelique and Lexi had a great day catching up with friends from all over the country, dancing and socialising.
Next year’s competition has already been booked for Sunday, December 6, 2009 with dancers from interstate and even overseas already committing to travel to Young for the premiere event.
