PASSIONATE about progress and experienced in all facets of local government, Peter Vlatko from Adelaide has been appointed as Young Shire Council General Manager to replace the outgoing Adrian Hanrahan.
Mr Vlatko will commence his new position at the council chambers on August 25, bringing his family, along with his enthusiasm, to Young.
Mr Vlatko started work as a trainee accountant at Broken Hill council after finishing school, and since then has gained extensive experience at Maitland and Cobra Councils.
He has spent the last 15 years working as General Manager in Adelaide at Stirling and Campbelltown councils.
“I have 30 years experience in local government and that is really where my passion lies,” Mr Vlatko said.
“In the true sense, working in local government gives you the opportunity to do something with people, working with staff and with the community to build the future.”
Mr Vlatko is a family man at heart, and his wife Anna and one of his four sons, 12-year-old Nicolas, will be relocating with him.
Mr Vlatko is very grateful to have received the position, saying the beautiful countryside, small town community and great job opportunity are what drew his family to the area.
He aims to build on what has been established at Young Shire Council and challenge the future of Young.
“It’s important that sometimes we let our hair down and explore the boundaries of where we should go and the decisions that should be made,” he said.
“I use the same principals in my family and work life. I won’t hide a thing. I believe the community has a share hold in council and the decisions made and I will listen and learn from councillors, staff members and the community to make sure we start kicking goals.”
Mr Vlatko was one of four who were interviewed last week by all councillors out of 16 candidates and Mayor Gerry Bailey said he was clearly the candidate of choice.
“He comes with a wide variety of experience, and an extremely good reputation,” Mr Bailey said.
“We look forward to working with him, as we believe he will provide a new momentum to the progress of Young.”
Mr Hanrahan will complete his last day of duties as General Manager on Friday.
Leader for Planning and Environment Craig Filmer will hold the position until Mr Vlatko commences work on August 25.
