NEXT Thursday Young hospital staff doctor Mahavir Gupta will spend his last day in the emergency department after resigning to look for new opportunities.
Dr Gupta has worked at the emergency department for the past three years and nine months and had hoped to stay long term.
“Over the years the number of presentations to the emergency department kept on growing and it became increasingly difficult for me to fulfill the community expectations,” he said.
“Further, sadly, in view of the lack of any opportunity for progress, I have opted to look for opportunities elsewhere.”
Despite the decision to move on, Dr Gupta describes the three years and nine months at the hospital as being a rewarding experience.
“I joined Young District Hospital in 2004 and obtained three (general practice) fellowships during these years with the intention of retiring in Young,” he said.
“The initial assistance was commendable, however, before joining I was given the impression that the position would suit someone looking for a semi-retired position,”
He still remembers the initial visit he and his wife Saroj made to Young back in June 2004.
“Anne Dawes, the then senior nurse manager gave directions over the phone how we could reach Young and all the way I kept wondering how the Cherry Capital of Australia could be so far from the main roads,” he recalls.
He remembers a warm welcome from Ms Dawes and community health representatives Eric Smith and Helen Waugh.
“Saroj repeatedly suggested for me to take up the position as she felt the friendliness of the community. I think the credit goes to Helen Waugh,” he said.
“Then I met my wonderful colleagues, among others I would like to mention Dr Paul Sevier. He has been persistently supportive and helpful.”
Dr Wayne Hobbs has been a kind friend, colleague and support.
Dr Gleeson, Dr Larcombe, Dr Ross, Dr Meagher, Dr Sullivan and Dr Hamilton Gibbs have all been kind enough to provide support and extra information for their patients whenever required, and working with some nurse colleagues has been helpful.”
Dr Gupta said he has not yet decided on his next post but both he and his wife enjoy living in Young.
While Dr Gupta will no longer be present at the hospital, the people of Young have been pledged a continuing service by Greater Southern Area Health Service.
