Australia’s open garden weekend in Young on October 18 and 19 will rival other such events held in the Hilltops region in recent years. Staged on three magnificent properties from 10am to 4.30pm both days it features spring bulbs, flowering shrubs, colourful perennials, native and exotic trees and other highlights of interest on each property.
‘Memagong’ owned by Tory and Butch Davidson dates back to the 1870s. It is 21 kilometres from town on Memagong Lane and is characterised by rambling paths, sweeping beds of trees, low dry stonewalls and even a small secret garden that will appeal to those with romantic tendencies.
‘Stump Jump’ also down Memagong Lane but only 12 kilometres from Young has splendid uninterrupted views of the entire Burrangong Valley and, as the canola will be in flower, the scene will be like a patchwork quilt featuring vibrant yellows and greens. Also of interest are the huge granite boulders, the highly productive vegetable garden and the developing natives that Juliet and Donald McFarlane have planted. ‘Stump Jump’ will also have displays of unique artworks with an outdoor orientation.
‘Restalrig’ owned by Laurence Erwin and Ruth Lovisolo on the Hartfield Road also features a secluded secret garden and fairy dell as well as a courtyard. Gravel paths meander through mixed plantings of natives and exotics including maples and silver birches.
Delicious finger food, tea, coffee and cool drinks will be available at both ‘Memagong’ and ‘Restalrig’ throughout the weekend and funds raised will go to three very worthy local causes, the Women’s Crisis Centre, Rotary’s Shelter Boxes that provide emergency relief for those affected by natural disasters and the Young and District Education Foundation.
Entry to all properties is $5.00 and garden enthusiasts are expected from all over the state. Enquiries should be directed to Annie Snodgrass on 02 6383 3252.
Opening as part of Australia’s Open Garden Scheme, a not for profit organisation promoting the knowledge and pleasure of gardens and gardening. Each year the Scheme opens the finest and most exciting private gardens across Australia to the garden loving public.
All gardens will be open between 10am & 4.30pm on Saturday and Sunday, October 18 and 19 at an entry fee of $5. Children under 18 are admitted free.
